SoftBank Group has completed its massive investment in OpenAI, fulfilling a planned funding round of up to about $40 billion by sending the final tranche of roughly $22 billion to the AI company behind ChatGPT, according to people familiar with the matter, as reported by CNBC. This funding, first agreed earlier in 2025, makes it one of the largest private tech investments ever and significantly increases SoftBank’s ownership in OpenAI to more than 10 percent. SoftBank’s CEO Masayoshi Son has emphasized the strategic importance of AI, and the capital is expected to support OpenAI’s expansion and infrastructure, including collaborations like the Stargate project with Oracle. SoftBank funded earlier parts of the deal and also syndicated a portion with other investors to help complete its commitment.
