OpenAI has launched a new “Shopping Research” capability in ChatGPT that helps users turn product questions into personalized buyer guides by asking follow-up questions, pulling current info from trusted sites, and offering side-by-side comparisons of items based on price, features, reviews, and availability. It works on free and paid plans across mobile and web, and during the holiday period it offers nearly unlimited usage so people can research items like gifts, electronics, or home goods. Users can initiate it by either asking a shopping-related question in ChatGPT or selecting the tool from the menu, then they describe what they want (budget, intended use, preferences), and the system adapts to feedback (“Not interested” or “More like this”) and even takes into account past chat history if enabled. The company emphasizes that results are based on publicly available retail data, those chats are not shared with retailers, and users should still verify details like price and stock on merchant sites because the tool might not always be accurate.
