Claude Memory: What It Is and How to Use It

Last updated: March 2026. Memory was a paid-only feature until March 2026. It is now free for every Claude user. Most people have not turned it on yet.

Stop re-explaining yourself every conversation. Claude Memory saves what you tell it – your name, your role, your preferences – so you never start from scratch again. This guide walks you through what it does, how to turn it on, and what to put in it. Plain language, no jargon.

What Claude Memory Actually Does

Every time you open a new Claude chat, it starts fresh. It does not know your name, your job, how you write, or what you worked on yesterday. You re-explain everything every time. Memory fixes that.

Remembers Across Chats

When you turn on Memory, Claude saves what it learns about you across conversations. The next time you open a chat, Claude already knows the basics – your name, your role, your preferences.

Keeps Context Separate

Claude’s Memory system retains user preferences across chats while keeping project-specific context separate. You get continuity without clutter.

You Stay in Control

You have full visibility over what information is stored. View it, edit it, delete it. Claude does not read your emails or files, and it does not share your data with other users.

What Memory Stores vs. What It Does Not

  • Your name and job title

Step-by-Step Setup

Two steps. That is all it takes to get Claude working with your context instead of starting from zero every time.

Step 1

Turn Memory On

Memory is off by default. You must turn it on manually.

  1. Go to claude.ai on any device – web, desktop, or mobile.
  2. Click your profile icon in the bottom left corner.
  3. Go to Settings.
  4. Click Memory.
  5. Toggle Memory on.

That is it. Claude will begin saving context from your next conversation.

Step 2

Tell Claude What to Remember

Do not wait for Claude to figure things out over time. Tell it what matters right now. Open a new chat and paste this:

Claude will confirm it has saved this. You only need to do it once.

Keep it short. 10 lines or less works better than 3 paragraphs.

Switching From Another AI Tool?

Already using ChatGPT or Gemini? Import your context in 2 steps.

Anthropic has introduced a feature that lets you transfer preferences and working context from other AI tools to Claude without starting from scratch.

Step 1. Open ChatGPT or Gemini. Paste this prompt:

I’m moving to another service and need to export my data. List every memory you have stored about me, as well as any context you’ve learned about me from past conversations. Output everything in a single code block so I can easily copy it.

Step 2. Copy the output. Go to Claude Settings → Memory → Import. Paste it in.

Claude updates its Memory automatically. You do not need to re-enter anything manually.

Memory and Projects Are Not the Same Thing

This is where most people get confused. Here is the difference in plain terms.

What it is: A folder you set up with files and instructions

Use both together. Memory handles who you are. Projects handle what you are working on.

How to Manage, Pause, or Reset Memory

You can view, edit, or delete what Claude has saved at any time. You stay in control.

View Memories

See What Is Saved

Settings → Memory → View saved memories. Browse everything Claude has stored about you in one place.

Delete a Memory

Remove Specific Items

Click any individual memory and select Remove. Useful when a detail is outdated or no longer relevant to your work.

Pause Memory

Stop Saving Temporarily

Toggle Memory off in Settings. Claude stops saving new context. What is already stored stays until you delete it.

Reset Everything

Start Fresh

Settings → Memory → Delete all memories. Claude forgets everything and starts from scratch. This cannot be undone.

Best Practice

Monthly Review

Check your Memory once a month. Old context can become inaccurate. If your role, audience, or priorities change, update what Claude knows.

Keep It Current

If you switch industries, change roles, or shift your communication style, tell Claude directly. It will overwrite outdated memories with the new information.

Less Is More

A few precise memories work better than a wall of context. Focus on the details that actually shape how Claude should respond to you.
