Claude Setup Guide

3 Tools, One Simple System

Most people pick the wrong Claude tool for the job. Projects, Cowork, and Skills each do one thing well. This guide shows you how to tell them apart and set them up in under 30 minutes.

Step 1. Know What Each Tool Does

Claude gives you three distinct tools. Each one solves a different problem. Pick the wrong one and you waste time re-explaining yourself or copying text into documents manually.

Projects

Projects is a folder that holds context about who you are. Every chat you start inside a Project begins informed. You do not re-explain your role, tone, or audience each time.

Best for: ongoing workflows where context matters.

Cowork

Cowork connects Claude to your desktop. It reads your actual folders and produces real documents – not text in a chat window. You get a Word doc, a slide, a report – saved to your computer.

Best for: tasks where you need a deliverable, not a conversation.

Skills

A Skill trains Claude once. After that, Claude runs the same task the same way every time – without you re-explaining the steps. Think of it as a saved workflow with a trigger.

Best for: tasks you do more than 3 times per week.

Step 2. Set Up Projects First

Start here before you touch Cowork or Skills. A good Project takes 10 minutes to set up and saves hours each week.

Go to claude.ai

Click Projects, then Create Project. Name it after one workflow. For example: “LinkedIn Posts” or “Client Proposals.”

Upload Your Best Examples

Upload 2 to 3 of your best examples as files. Quality matters more than quantity. Do not upload 50 documents. Less information, done well, works better.

Write Your Instructions

Write your instructions in plain language. No jargon needed. Claude works best when you tell it who you are, how you write, and who your audience is.

Step 3. Set Up Cowork for Real File Output

Cowork is a desktop app. Download it from claude.com/download. Verify current pricing at claude.ai before subscribing.

Setup Steps

Download, folder, configure

  • Download Cowork and install it on your computer.
  • Create a folder called “Cowork” with 4 subfolders. Name them by output type: Writing, Research, Presentations, Reports.
  • Create a file called about-me.md inside the folder. Write what you do, how you work, and one example of your best output.
  • Open the Cowork tab. Add your folder. Select Opus 4.6 as your model. (Verify model name is current at claude.ai before publishing.)

Pro Tip 1: Cowork saves actual documents to your desktop. It does not just show you text in a chat.

Pro Tip 2: You can create a Project inside Cowork. This gives you memory and file output together.

Pro Tip 3: Cowork asks you questions before it starts. Answer them. This improves the output.

Step 4. Build Your First Skill

Most Claude users have never heard of Skills. That is an advantage for you. A Skill is a saved instruction set stored in a file called SKILL.md. Claude reads it automatically and runs the task without you explaining it again.

Build a Skill in 4 Steps

From task to automated workflow

  • Pick one task you do 3 or more times per week. Examples: writing hooks, summarizing reports, drafting follow-up emails.
  • Create a folder and name it after that task. For example: “Hook Writer.”
  • Inside that folder, create a file called SKILL.md.
  • In that file, write three things: what the Skill does, when it activates, and 2 examples of perfect output.

Remember: The more specific your examples, the better Claude performs. Vague instructions produce vague results.

Step 5. Know When to Use Which Tool

Before your next Claude session, ask yourself: Am I chatting, creating, or automating?

You want Claude to know your background in every chat

Use Projects

Context carries forward across every conversation. No more repeating who you are or what you need.

You need a real document saved to your computer

Use Cowork

Get actual Word docs, slides, and reports saved to your desktop. Not text in a chat window.

You repeat the same task and want consistent output

Use Skills

Train Claude once, then run the same workflow every time without re-explaining steps.

Before Your Next Claude Session, Check Three Things

1. Am I inside a Project?

Not a blank chat. Every conversation should start inside a Project so Claude already knows who you are and what you need.

2. Am I using Cowork when I need a deliverable?

If you need a real document – a report, a slide deck, a proposal – switch to Cowork. Stop copying and pasting from chat windows.

3. Have I built a Skill for tasks I explain more than once?

If you have typed the same instructions three times this week, it is time to create a Skill. Train Claude once and move on.
